Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
Saving Faces -- Changing Lives
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are:
Hospital trained ?
After four years of dental school, every Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
receives four to seven years hospital residency training. OMSs serve alongside
medical residents in general surgery, trauma surgery, anesthesia, plastic
surgery and physical diagnosis at prestigious teaching hospitals across
the nation.
Trauma specialists ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are often the first to treat facial and
cranial injuries due to auto accidents, gunshot wounds and other trauma.
In fact, Level I trauma centers are required to have OMSs on call to do
complex reconstruction of the mouth, face and jaws. Many trauma treatment
techniques used today were first developed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
in combat hospitals in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Cleft palate pioneers ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons pioneered cleft palate and other facial
reconstruction surgery in the early 1900s. OMSs were among the founders
of the current specialty of plastic surgery, established in the late 1920s.
Cancer surgeons ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons diagnose and treat cancer and other diseases
of the mouth, face and jaws. Oncologists and other medical specialists frequently
refer patients to OMSs, for surgery and other treatment.
Anesthesia experts ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons receive more training in anesthesia and
pain control than any other specialists except anesthesiologists. OMSs pioneered
many office-based anesthesia techniques now used by other specialists. Most
states certify OMS office anesthesia programs based on standards developed
by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The result
of this public/private sector cooperation is an office anesthesia safety
record rivaling that of hospitals.
Implant inventors ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons successfully place more than half a million
dental implants each year, giving patients a longer lasting, more comfortable
and stronger alternative to dentures and dental crowns. OMSs also use implants
to anchor prosthetic ears, noses and eyebrows, and to repair damaged or
malformed facial bones.
Bite correctors ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons surgically adjust jaw bones to help patients
with severe over- or under bites chew more comfortably and speak more clearly.
The surgeons who extract wisdom teeth ?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons extract millions of wisdom teeth annually,
saving patients from the pain and risk of infection that impacted molars
can bring. |
